What I am about to tell you is going to probably save you a whole lot of grief and heart ache; and perhaps several revision surgeries.... Unlike what most media try to lead you to believe and make you think, most Plastic Surgeons immediately after they complete their Plastic Surgery residency hardly have had enough experience in Cosmetic Surgery to be qualified to do Cosmetic Surgery independently. Being a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon by itself alone is most likely not enough qualification to do Cosmetic Surgery. It takes surgeons years of experience of performing and managing hundreds of a particular type of Cosmetic Surgery cases to become proficient in Cosmetic Surgery of that type. Plastic Surgery residency includes a large range of diverse training, mostly non-cosmetic surgery training such as training in the treatment of injuries and complications associated with burn, accidents, cancer, skin ulcers or functional problems such as hand injuries. Most Plastic Surgeons after finishing their residency are lucky if they have done a hand full of Cosmetic Surgeries (such as Nose Jobs; Breast Lifts; Face lifts, liposuction and etc.) on their own as independent surgeons. That is why; they usually need more experience in Cosmetic Surgery. Most of them are not interested in obtaining official training in Cosmetic Surgery so they choose to learn Cosmetic Surgery over the course of years of practice, generally by trial and error.
But now (for the last several years), there is a better option for them. Only a selected few however can succeed at obtaining a position in and attend official fellowship training in Cosmetic Surgery where they can learn the true skills of Cosmetic Surgery from an expert preceptor that has been pre-qualified. Only after the completion of this Fellowship training eventually the young doctors are allowed to sit for the Board examination of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is the ONLY board that represents Qualified and Fellowship trained Cosmetic Surgeons (in contrast to Plastic Surgeons) who have had the experience of participating in specifically hundreds of Cosmetic Surgery cases during their training. If a surgeon is in fact a Plastic Surgeon or another Board Certified Surgeon and then completes a one or two year full fellowship training in Cosmetic Surgery and he proceeds to apply to sit for the examination of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, only then he may be qualified to take that examination. It is a very difficult examination and only 60% or so of the doctors pass it the first time; and it includes both a written and an oral examination. Check out the Required Qualifications of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery for yourself and you will truly be amazed.
Most Cosmetic or Plastic Surgeons are not interested to obtain the additional required training that qualifies them to take this examination. Some organizations are fighting to take the public's attention away from the importance of this examination. www.AmericanBoardCosmeticSurgery.org is the website where you can learn more about the importance of adequate training in Cosmetic Surgery. If you are looking to have cosmetic surgery, I suggest you select a highly skilled Cosmetic Surgeon preferably one who is a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.
You know what else you MUST KNOW? After a surgeon is in fact qualified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, then and only then can he be qualified to apply to achieve the level and status of a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. AACS is an amazing organization with thousands of members and is the largest organization representing the specialists in the field of Cosmetic Surgery. Only a hand full of surgeons each year who are Diplomates of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and have completed hundreds of Cosmetic Surgeries and have successfully met the many stringent qualifications of the AACS are deemed qualified to be considered highly qualified in Cosmetic Surgery and are Bestowed the title of FELLOW of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Here is the website to check out the facts for yourself. www.cosmeticsurgery.org.
Again; I suggest you select a Cosmetic Surgeon who not only is a Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery but also, he has been Qualified as a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS).
